The cool and windy weather today, which is not too common in the Florida Keys, makes it a chili-eating kind of day, and lucky for us, the second day of the fourth annual Islamorada Moose Lodge Chili Cook-off is today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For $5, seven tastes of meat-filled chili await.
Contestants from seven states and Canada signed up to compete for bragging rights. Professional chefs and amateurs compete. Three categories for the professionals include traditional red chili, verde (with green chiles) and salsa. No beans are allowed under International Chili Society rules. Some home-style recipes which are not part of the official competition will feature beans. Musical entertainment and an opportunity to vote for your favorite chili is part of the fun at mile marker 81.4 oceanside. Proceeds benefit local non-profits. Bring a jacket to warm your bones, at least until the hot peppers kick in. For more information, call 305-664-8120.
If you gave chili up for Lent, and who hasn’t, there’s a fish fry also benefiting a good cause, held at the Caribbean Club, mile marker 104 bayside in Key Largo. Fish Fest features seafood, a silent auction and live music by local bands from noon to 6 p.m. The event benefits the popular St. James Episcopal Church’s Children’s Center.
