On Sunday, gunmen opened fire on a group of people on a soccer field in Juarez, killing seven and injuring four others, including a 12-year-old girl. One of those killed was an 11-year-old boy.
Both players and fans were among the dead.
According to Julio Castañeda, spokesman for the Chihuahua attorney general, police recovered 180 shell casings from assault rifles at the scene. All of the young victims were shot multiple times.
Juarez police spokesman Adrian Sanchez told National News Service: “They fired 180 rounds in three or four seconds. It happened fast. People here are still confused about what happened.”
The gunmen reportedly shouted threats before opening fire on the young people.
Ironically, the soccer field is part of a community center opened as part of a program aimed at decreasing drug violence in the city.
Juarez is the scene of an ongoing battle between the Sinaloa and Juarez Cartels, and saw over 3,100 murders in 2010. Many of those killed were children, including infants.
Since January 1, 2011, there have been 130 people murdered in Juarez.
