The Children’s museum of Indianapolis is known for finding innovative and creative experiences that bring fascinating and sometimes critical issues to life. Children’s health is no exception. If you have ever been to the restaurant in the main level you will find you typical fast food fair with pizza, burgers and even Starbucks. This month they will begin serving healthier options in its cafeteria operated through a partnership with Sedexo. The Kids Live Well program will help parents locate the healthier menu options at all museum dining locations. This award-winning program is a first-of-its-kind initiative led by the National Restaurant Association in collaboration with Healthy Dining. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis will be the first museum to offer the Kids Live Well program.

The healthier menu options will include kid friendly items including: grilled chicken dippers with graham crackers, fresh sliced apples and low fat milk, whole wheat pasta with marinara sauce, and cheese pizza with fruit cup and 100 percent fruit juice. All options are in line with current recommended dietary guidelines such the updated food pyramid. All new suggested foods are reviewed and approved by a team of dietitians and nutritionists from team at Healthy Dining. The Kids Live Well initiative was initiated to help parents find healthier options while dining out. They even have an app for that!

According to a press release by Sedexo USA “Our mission to provide extraordinary learning experiences extends throughout the museum, including the food choices served to children and families,” said Brian Statz, Vice President of Operations and General Counsel for The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. “Through hard work with Sodexo and our collaboration with the National Restaurant Association to bring this program to the museum, we are proud to lead the way as the first museum to join Kids LiveWell. This designation is a wonderful extension of our educational mission by helping families identify healthful menu options and further educate children about good nutritional habits.”

In true Children’s Museum style, they further help to reinforce healthy choices in lifestyle and food through the Health House Exhibit. This one of a kind exhibit helps kids recognize positive health habits and steer clear of the Coach Potato! The can look in the fridge for tips on healthy snacks, brush their teeth with Teeth Rex and talk with Teddy about the importance of sleep. This innovative learning opportunity also includes and online Health Investigations, Science Port presented by Health Care Excel where preschoolers and early readers can engage in fun interactive games about nutrition, healthy habits and active play. Families can even track daily activity and healthy choices.
