Children's coloring activity that easily explains a Gospel story

Explaining the Gospel to small children is not always an easy fete. The accounts of the Bible are not only difficult for kids to grasp, but could also be frightening. Simply bringing children to Mass regularly is one step on the way to greater understanding, and many Catholic Churches hand out age-appropriate coloring activities, like the one above, to assist in the teaching of the Gospel.

Sunday’s Holy Gospel according to John (14: 1-12) is somewhat long, most likely too lengthy for little ones to sit through. Jesus attempts to advise his disciples to have faith that Heaven is big enough for all who believe in Jesus Christ and emulate his behavior.

Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. ~ John 14

In a very basic way, the attached photograph helps children choose the right path to Heaven and which direction to take as Jesus explained in the Gospel reading. The arrows of love, kindness, truth, forgiveness, sharing and caring all point to Heaven, which of course are not the easiest for anyone to master, but serve as guiding points.

Hate, greed, dishonesty, selfishness and unhelpfulness all lead off the path away from Heaven, however not in a format as to scare young ones, but instead to guide them to be like Jesus Christ, as told in today’s Holy Gospel.
