Children's books on spring

San Antonio is having signs of spring…a plum tree blooming along San Pedro, new rose buds forming, and birds singing.  One sure sign of spring is planting seeds for a garden, inspecting new insects, and learning about flowers.   There are lessons is science that can be learned from children’s picture books on spring, insects, and flowers.  Go to the library or local bookstore and find a book on spring to read with your child.  You won’t be disappointed.

  • Spring is Here by Will Hillenbrand introduces animals as they wake up from hibernation.
  • The Dandelion Seed by Joseph Anthony tells the story of a dandelion’s journey through its life.  It teaches about seeds, season, and cycles as the seeds are blown in the wind.
  • From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons is a book on growth from seed to plant.  It uses new vocabulary such as pollination and dispersal.
  • The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle tells the life cycle of a flower.
  • Eliza and the Dragonfly by Susie Caldwell Rinehart has Eliza watch a dragonfly nymph grow from a baby to flying out of the pond.  This book weaves science throughout.
  • On One Flower:  Butterflies, Ticks, and a Few More Icks written by Jennifer DiRubbio is about two young boys discovering tiny insects.  The book includes unusual details on insects.
  • Near One Cattail:  Turtles, Logs and Leaping Frogs by Anthony D. Fredericks uses rhyme and narrative to tell the story of tadpoles playing and bugs dancing.
  • The Very Lonely Firefly by Eric Carle is an exciting book on a firefly’s search for other fireflies.
  • Are You a Dragonfly? by Judy Allen tells the story of metamorphosis.
  • It’s Spring by Linda Glaser shows the effects of spring on plants and animals as a boy explores the world.  Some rhyming in the book adds to the enjoyment.
  • My Spring Robin by Anne Rockwell tells the story of a little girl searching for a robin-a true sign of spring.  It includes sprouting ferns, colorful flowers, and a tiny toad.
