We’re seeing a light rain in Northeast San Antonio this morning. San Antonio weather forecast a chance of thunderstorms. It’s the perfect chance to read a book with your child and why not a book about rain?
- Who Likes Rain? by Wong Herbert Yoe is a book about a little girl who discovers who likes the rain. Is it the cat, dog, frog or fish? The rhyming text promotes fluency.
- Rain by Manya Stojic is set in the African savanna with the animals using their senses to track the storm. The book has short sentences which helps young readers. The beautiful paintings promote understanding of the text by connecting the words and pictures.
- The Rain Came Down by David Shannon shares a funny story about the entire city of animals having uproar and it isn’t until the sun returns that they smile, and help each other clean up. David Shannon is an excellent author with other books such as No David! and How I Became a Pirate.
- Down Comes the Rain by James Graham Hale explains the water cycle. The sun dries the puddles, the heat turns water into vapor and it evaporates. Eventually, moisture forms clouds and the rain falls again. This is a great science book in picture book form.
- Red Rubber Boot Day by Mary Lyn Ray celebrates rain. With very little text, the author gives ideas of things to do inside when it is raining and illustrates the idea to go outside and enjoy splashing in the puddles.
- Splash, Joshua, Splash! by Malachy Doyle tells the story of a little boy who loves the water. Visualize the world with this book as Joshua jumps in the puddles on the farm, splashes in the pool, and snuggles on the rainy bus ride home.
- My favorite author Robert Munsch writes Mud Puddle. In Mud Puddle Jule Ann gets muddy all over when a mud puddle jumps on her.
These books for children from preschool to 1st grade are fun to read anytime. Add some fun in reading and check out one or more of these books and find a teachable moment on rain, water, and mud.
