Chippy Chipmunk: Babies in the Garden by Kathy Miller is an amazingly colorful and educational book about a family of chipmunks: Chippy, Lily and their four babies, Rosalie, Roosevelt, Rachel and Benjamin. This brood takes up residence in the author's yard, which gives her a remarkable opportunity to photograph their lives. Miller shot all of the images for this book.
A sequel to Chippy Chipmunk Parties in the Garden, this story finds Chippy anxiously awaiting the arrival of his offspring. Once they finally come out of their burrow, the baby chipmunks explore and roam the area. A photographer by hobby, Miller captures the behavior and moods of the chipmunks from Chippy's bright eyes when he meets his babies for the first time to Rachel's discovery of her reflection in the water of a bird bath.
At the end of the book, readers can learn different facts about chipmunks including:
- Chipmunks are born in the spring and summer
- They practice survival skills by playing
- Baby chipmunks are only one inch long at birth
The book also has an array of beautiful photographs of other animals including a rabbit, an owl, an eagle and even her pet cat, Chester.
This book is for children ages four and older, although the young at heart may enjoy it too. It is a great addition to any child's home library and is perfect for classroom discussions about small animals and their behaviors.
