I recently read In My Bath by Beth Bence Reinke, so I couldn't resist checking out her second book, A Wish and a Prayer.
When Jason's pet parakeet, Sunny, escapes out a window and disappears, not even Jason's special whistle can coax her back. In hopes of bringing Sunny home, Jason and his friends make wishes on traditional "wishing" objects for a whole week. He wishes on a penny in the fountain, birthday candles, and even a clock. But there's no sign of Sunny. When Mom asks, "Is a wish the same as a prayer?" Jason realizes nobody's heard his wishes. So before bedtime, Jason closes his eyes and prays for Sunny to come home.
This is an endearing tale that reminds everyone about the power of prayer and the importance of tapping into God's love. God, through prayer, opens eyes, changes hearts, heals wounds, and grants wisdom. It reminds us all that you may wish all you want on material things, but it's God who created those things and has the power to hear and answer prayers. A strong tale to share with any young reader.
