Children's book exchanges- a great way to get free books

My son is 17 months old. He loves to read. So much so that he has his favorite book memorized and can read it to me. He tells me all about the story, the pictures and sometimes he will add to the story to make it his own. Recently, a friend from Oklahoma got us participating in a children's book exchange- a simple act that not only lets us participate in a fun activity with our kids but also gives them free books, through the mail, which they also love.

The exchange is quite simple. You send an invite to six of your friends, your six friends send invites to six of their friends, and the chain begins. In our instance, we send a book to the kids of the person that involved my friend. The friends of my six friends will send books to Hail. You send out one book and you get 36 in return. Some people say that this is chain mail, however, I have done this with friends before, we always play with our Portland friends, and we get so many more cool books in return. It is a great way to get rid of gently used books that we do not read anymore and replacing it with some awesome new ones that we never even knew about. Ideally, as long as everyone participates, it works as it should. It is not only fun, but even if you only get one or two books out of the whole chain; it is more than what you had before. It is a pay it forward thing.

It is never too early to teach your kids to like and appreciate books. Consider doing a book exchange with some of your friends. The best part of this exchange is that your kids get mail in the mailbox that is for them. It is not just the junk mail you do not care about, but something addressed to them that they get to keep.
