Children and the holiday seasons

“I want a bike, a Nintendo, an ipad for Christmas”. Children all over America have a list of “I wants” for Santa Claus. The holiday seasons is in full force, hence is a time of great demands.
The holiday: Children learn about the holiday season via television. Mid November movies are projected across the screen filled with gift giving, love, and sharing. Charlie Brown and Snoopy are shown every Christmas season and expound on the true meaning of Christmas. The commercials between movies and “Christmas specials” bombard viewers with holiday gifts, sales and ideas on the best holiday celebration. The goal is to get the public to spend.
The hustle: Children learn about the holiday season by observing their parents. Parents work overtime for the holidays to meet the demand of retail financial goals. Everyone is running around town to make purchases to please their loved ones.
A change: One parent said she decided not “to do” Christmas this year “because it has become too commercialized. We have lost the true meaning of Christmas and this year I plan on refocusing my attention. No shopping just spending quality time with friends and family”. When asked about her children’s reaction, mom responded, “at first they were uncooperative but this is our third year of refocusing. Her children have since learned the true meaning of Christmas and know they enjoy family time and reserve their list of “I wants” for their birthdays.
