Children and exotic animal safety

Safety of children around exotic and domestic pets is a responsibility that should not be overlooked or taken lightly. Even domestic pets can sometimes cause harm even if through play and unintentional. Taking the time to teach children proper handling techniques and providing supervision is in the best interest of the child and the animal.

Very young children can hold most animals with help from an adult. Teaching them not to squeeze the animal is usually the first lesson a parent teaches! Depending on the animal, squeezing too hard may cause the animal to bite or scratch in self defense. However, staying calm and not exciting the child or animal will lead to better success at teaching young children. If a particular child is too excitable it may be best to wait until they’ve had time to mature a little more and learn self control. Some children get so excited seeing animals close up and getting to touch them that their handling can be a little rough. Use common sense and your best judgment as to what each child is ready for regardless of age. Some children adapt much more readily to handling animals than others.

Keep size in mind when deciding when a child is ready to handle an exotic pet and also the pet’s temperament and behavior. Just as you wouldn’t allow a five-year old walk a Great Dane on a leash that has never been trained, you also would not allow a five-year old to handle a six-foot python alone. Allowing the child to pet the exotic animal while an adult holds it is more appropriate and maybe allowing them to hold the tail also. A child can usually be taught proper handling and progress as they grow up to holding one by themselves. Teenagers can sometimes take on the sole responsibility for the care of some exotic pets but adult supervision and “checking up” on the care and handling practices will benefit the child and the animal.

ALWAYS teach proper hygiene- wash your hands after holding, do not put an animal near your mouth or face. Basic lessons taught as a child grows up can lead to a lifelong appreciation for different exotic pets in a responsible manner.
