The University of Nebraska's State Museum, Morrill Hall, held it's regular Sunday with a Scientist today. On the third Sunday of every month children can get up close and personal with a real live Scientist and learn firsthand about various aspects of Science.
This month's topic was Endangered and Invasive Species and Protecting the Plover. Attendees were shown mussel encrusted shoes, models of Carp and took handouts related to various plants and animals that have invaded Nebraska's environs. Coloring pages, stickers, tattoos and pencils added to the fun. It was also possible to harvest grass seeds from native plants and plant them in tiny containers to take home in an effort to encourage native plant regrowth.
Children also got a chance to learn all about the Plover bird and how it's habitat is being eroded due largely to damming and the destruction of the sand banks upon which they like to nest. The scientists were very friendly, informal and informative and visitors all seemed to enjoy their experience greatly.
Morrill Hall is full of fascinating things for everyone to see and do. Huge mammoth skeletons, dinosaur bones and gigantic fish, all of which have been found in Nebraska, give a sense of just how tiny we all are. Children walk the halls with their necks craned backwards and their eyes and mouths wide.
The discovery center has a mock up of a dinosaur dig and children need no encouragment to climb in and dig or sweep away the rubberized ash to uncover the dinosaur skeleton underneath. Hours of entertainment for many a small child.
Next month's topic is Nebraska's Climate and will be held on the 16th of May.

Looks awesome, Tiffany! A must-do for my family when we visit.
It looks like a fabulous place to visit with the kids. I hope to take my own soon. Thanks!
I keep saying I'm gonna get the kids there, but never seem to have the time. Thanks for reminding me everything Morrill Hall has to offer.
