Child saved with mattress: Burbank couple saves falling child with mattress

A child saved with a mattress is alive today after falling three stories out of a window of an apartment building in California. On March 18, ABC Los Angeles reported that a Burbank couple was moving out of their apartment at the same time that the child fell. The couple's quick thinking undoubtedly saved the child's life.

"The child climbed out of the window and was actually hanging out on to what appeared to be a telephone line or a cable line. They placed the mattress underneath the child, and at that point the child released and fell to the ground," said Burbank Police Lt. John Dilibert (via ABC Los Angeles).

The child saved with the mattress was identified as a 3-year-old boy. The couple had noticed the boy and his sister throwing their toys out the window but didn't think they would witness what happened next. The toddler threw his leg over the windowsill and climbed out of the home. The parents of the child evidently weren't paying attention to what their kids were doing. It's unclear why the boy decided to climb out -- perhaps he wanted to retrieve one of the toys that he initially threw.

"It was very surreal afterwards. We were just moving the rest of day and every once in a while we'd look at each other and just be like, 'That happened. That was real,'" said Jennifer Lightner who helped her husband save the falling baby.

The child saved with the mattress was extremely lucky that the couple was moving their mattress at the exact time he fell. Interestingly enough, the couple said that they got stuck in an elevator for about 30 minutes before this incident -- if they didn't get stuck, they may not have been faced with saving a child's life.
