You never know if your little one will get lost. Help your child to easily memorize her name and phone number so you can be contacted quickly. Memorization comes easily for children so harness that drive and use it for their benefit.

Children enjoy learning their name. Take a piece of paper and cut it in thirds the long way. Write her name on it in clear bold letters. Post her name tag throughout the house; one in the bathroom, near her bed, by her chair at the table and in front of her seat in the car.

Once she has learned to spell her name, you can use that knowledge to find those letters in billboards, newspapers, magazines and so on. This simple lesson is the beginning of phonemic awareness. But best of all it can help save her life.

Next is memorizing her phone number. It may be a better idea to have her memorize your cell phone number so you can be immediately contacted.

One way to make it more fun is to learn it through song. You can use the tune of “Are you sleeping”.

Write out the number so she can see it. Point to each number while singing it. For a phone number of (510) 482-9326, the song will go something like this:

five one oh-oh
five one oh-oh
four eight twoo
four eight twoo
ni- ine three-ee two six
ni-ine three-ee two six
Mom’s cell phone
Mom’s cell phone

Once she has it down, show her how to dial it on the phone.

Next teach her how to dial 911 and the proper way to use this special number, 911 is only for emergencies and should never be used for fun. Explain what an emergency is.

Hopefully your child will never have to use any of these lifesaving tips, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
