Chihuahua puppy survives 80-foot fall

A three-month old Chihuahua puppy survived an 80-foot fall and was rescued by lifeguards in San Diego. The Chihuahua male puppy fell off San Diego’s famous Sunset Cliffs on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, according to San Diego’s 10News.

San Diego’s Sunset Cliffs are sharp cliffs with a steep fall down to the rugged waters of the Pacific Ocean. For San Diego locals, the Sunset Cliffs area is a favorite area to watch sunsets, to surf, or to take a walk. The Sunset Cliffs waters are dangerous because of the power of the waves and the sighting of great white sharks.

Because of the exposure to sun, wind, and strong waves, San Diego’s Sunset Cliffs can be dangerous for people who get too close to the edge. Since the steep cliffs are only separated by a rope from the adjacent sidewalk, serious injuries or accidental deaths have occurred.

Understanding the nature of San Diego’s Sunset Cliffs makes the survival of the three-month old Chihuahua puppy a true miracle.

The Chihuahua puppy is believed to have fallen off the cliffs near Ladera Street around 2 p.m. on Friday.

The Chihuahua puppy’s owner has not been located so far. Authorities originally believed that the owner might have intentionally left the Chihuahua puppy behind at the dangerous Sunset Cliffs. A newest 10News update at 11 p.m. on Friday reports that the owners were walking the puppy along Sunset Cliffs. When the puppy fell off, the owners ran away. They have not yet been found.

After lifeguards rescued the little fellow at the bottom of the 80-foot cliffs, the Chihuahua puppy was taken to nearby Ocean Beach where it was examined by a veterinarian.

“Daniel E. DeSousa, deputy director of the San Diego Department of Animal Services said the puppy was under their care, but that it suffered some serious head trauma, so it was transferred to an emergency hospital for observation overnight.”

San Diego’s deputy director DeSousa also said that “the dog's treatment will be covered by the Department’s Spirit Fund.”

San Diegans are sending their healing spirits and wish the little Chihuahua puppy all the best.
