Holy Scott Pioli, Batman!
In a mini-flashback to the days when former KC Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli seemingly picked up every available New England Patriot player with a pulse to play for KC, the Kansas City Chiefs announced on Twitter Friday that they signed former Patriot cast-off, wide receiver Mark Harrison, to a free agent contract.
Harrison, a second-year pro out of Rutgers University, was most recently a part of the Patriots roster, but was released the first week of June. According to rumor on the MassLive web site, Harrison might have been released partly because he showed up late to one of the volunteer OTA sessions in New England, “according to a source.”
Regardless of why Harrison was released by the Pats, the Chiefs are looking to get more athletic at wide receiver, where only current starters Dwayne Bowe and Donnie Avery can breathe easy about their job status, and the 6-foot-3, 230-lb receiver will provide that.
Harrison surprised a lot of scouts at last year’s NFL Scouting Combine when he ran a 4.46 40-yard dash and bench pressed 225 pounds 17 times. But it was his performance in the vertical jump (38.5 inches) and broad jump (129 inches) that really opened some eyes as they were two of the best marks at the wide receiver position.
Unfortunately, soon after the Combine, Harrison broke his foot which caused him to go undrafted. He failed a physical with the Chicago Bears but landed with the Patriots soon afterwards.
After his release by New England, Harrison took part in the Chiefs mini-camp this week as one of four tryout players invited to participate. He showed off his leaping ability on one memorable play far down the sideline when he out-jumped rookie corner Quinton Byrd to make a highlight catch.
Assuming Harrison uses some of the money from his new contract to buy an alarm clock so he won’t be late for training camp next month, he could become a sleeper to watch. Well, hopefully a “sleeper” in the positive sense of the word.
