The Kansas City Chiefs continued an exciting third day of the draft for their beleaguered fan base by drafting quarterback Aaron Murray in the fifth round of the NFL Draft with the 163rd overall pick.

There is little doubt that Murray, the QB of the Georgia Bulldogs has more name recognition for Chiefs fans than their first three draft picks, Dee Ford, Phillip Gaines, or De’Anthony Thomas. Since the Missouri Tigers moved to the SEC Conference two years ago, most of the Chiefs fan base has gotten to know the SEC players better and Murray certainly fits that bill.

And for a team who last got a win by a quarterback that they drafted back in … wait for it … September 13, 1987 when Todd Blackledge beat the San Diego Chargers 20-13, Chiefs fans will undoubtedly be happy that KC took a QB that has a chance to break that drought.

Murray (6-1, 207-lbs) might be a tad undersized and light by SEC standards, but the senior finished his college career as the only QB in SEC history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in all four seasons and is the conference's career record holder in touchdowns (121) and passing yards (13,166). However, in his final regular season game in 2013, he tore his ACL in his left knee against Kentucky.

Mike Mayock, the draft analyst for the NFL Network says this about the Chiefs selection of Murray on the draft broadcast, "[Chiefs head coach] Andy Reid values these guys. Now you bring in a guy who will compete to be the No. 3 guy against Tyler Bray in Year 1. I think it's pretty simple, they paid Chase Daniel big money last year. You're lucky to get through a season with your No. 1 guy. They have Bray, who has a ton of arm talent. Now, they bring in a kid as clean as can be. The Chiefs have their young, developmental guy.”

Both Reid and Chiefs general manager John Dorsey have a long history of drafting quarterbacks like Murray – tons of upside but with flaws that make some teams hesitate about drafting them – and putting them in position to shine. Then, when the time is right, they have traded these kinds of QBs for draft picks. Between Bray and Murray, the Chief potentially have two players that they might trade later on.

Then again, if he team cannot come to an agreement with current starter Alex Smith before his contract ends at the end of the upcoming season, they might get a chance to be the Chiefs starter in 2015.
