The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly reached long-term contract deals with wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and punter Dustin Colquitt and have placed the franchise tag on offensive tackle Branden Albert, keeping their three most important free agents in place for next year.
Multiple sources are reporting that the team came to terms on a 5-year contract with Bowe, 28, which would seem to eliminate the contract drama that has surrounded the talented wide receiver for the past few years. Bowe is by far the most talented receiver on the team and would seemingly be an important target for new quarterback, Alex Smith. Terms of Bowe’s contract are thought to be around $50 million with possibly $24 million guaranteed.
Colquitt, 30, has long been one of the top punters in the league and was a Pro Bowl participant this last year. At times, Colquitt was the most consistent performer for the team during a disastrous 2012 season. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Colquitt’s deal is also for 5 years and is worth $18.75 million with $8.9 million guaranteed.
As a franchised player, Albert, 28, will be getting $9.828 million on a 1-year contract for 2013. He and the Chiefs have until July 15 to come to a long-term deal or he will play under his franchise deal. It is not clear whether Albert is an exclusive-rights franchise player that cannot negotiate with other teams, or non-exclusive, which means he can try to make a better deal for himself with another team.
Should he be non-exclusive and signs with another team when the official free agency period begins on March 12, the Chiefs would get two first-round picks from the Chargers as compensation.
