Thursday was quite a day for the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs because linebacker Justin Houston was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September by the NFL. But even more important was the return to practice of RB Jamaal Charles and CB Brandon Flowers who had missed practice earlier in the week because of injuries.
In winning the Player of the Month honors, Houston registered 19 tackles, 7.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble, as he helped the Chiefs to a 4-0 record. He won the AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors in both Weeks 1 (vs Jacksonville) and 3 (vs Philadelphia). His 7.6 sacks ties him with Robert Mathis (Indianapolis) for the league lead.
Houston and his teammates on the Chiefs defense have allowed an NFL-low 10.3 points per game, with a league-high 18 sacks in four games. They are third in the league in creating turnovers with 12, and only rank behind Chicago (14) and Seattle (13) in that statistic.
This is the first time Houston has won a Player of the Month award and is the first Chiefs linebacker to do so since Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas did it in December, 1997.
Of more immediate importance to maintaining their undefeated record, the Chiefs welcomed Charles and Flowers back to the practice field. Both players had missed all activities this week due to injuries. The two saw limited participation Thursday along with safety Kendrick Lewis and guard Jeff Allen and all four are expected to play Sunday against Tennessee. Unfortunately first round pick Eric Fisher was held out of practice due to concussion symptoms. Fisher is very doubtful to play.
