One bite of this delicious orange chicken will leave you wanting more -- it has such a great taste! So many people think of orange chicken as a deep-fried affair, but this recipe bakes it for an amazing result. You will use this recipe time and again, as it is a keeper.

You can use prepared orange juice, but it is even better with freshly-squeezed. By using real oranges, you will also have fresh orange zest – and there is nothing better for a real orange taste. When you zest an orange, be careful that you only grate only the “orange” part of the peel. The white fiber under the skin of an orange is very bitter.

If you like your food a little spicy, add ¼ - ½ tsp. red pepper flakes; it adds a perfect flavor and perfect amount of heat. This is an optional ingredient for those who don’t like spicy foods at all.

Baked Orange Chicken Recipe

Ingredients for Baked Orange Chicken:

  • 1 cup orange juice, freshly-squeezed
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 6 tablespoons vinegar
  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 tsp. ginger
  • 6 chicken breasts, boneless and skinless
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • ¼ - ½ tsp. red pepper flakes (optional)

Directions for making Baked Orange Chicken:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease the bottom and sides of a 9x13 baking dish. Place the chicken breasts in a single layer on the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

In a mixing bowl, combine the orange juice, orange zest, vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, and ginger. Pour the orange mixture over the chicken. Bake for 45 minutes or until the chicken is no longer pink in the middle.

Remove the chicken from the oven. Pour the juices into a sauce pan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch and water, then add it to the juices. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce has thickened. Add the red pepper flakes, if using. Pour the sauce over the chicken. Delicious served with rice.
