Chicken plant cockroaches close down massive chicken farm twice

Chicken plant cockroaches have caused a massive chicken farm to close, again. The company in question is Foster Poultry Farms, and the affected plant is located in Livingston, Calif. They were shut down temporarily by the USDA earlier this month, reopened over the weekend, and then closed again, this time voluntarily, according to a Jan. 14, 2014 report by ABC News.

Although the company maintains that no chicken products were impacted by the chicken plant cockroaches, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) closed the facility after finding live roaches on five occasions in locations ranging from a hand-washing sink to a tub that comes into direct contact with product.

There have been no recalls associated with the chicken plant cockroaches at this time, and Foster Poultry Farms issued a statement maintaining that pest control treatment measures have been taken to correct the problem.

The plant reopened after the pest control treatment only to close again.

An official Notice of Suspension was drafted to Foster Poultry Farms on Jan. 8, 2014. It outlines the "egregious insanitary conditions observed in [the] establishment . . .":

• On January 7, 2014, FSIS documented a noncompliance for live cockroaches
found during production on a grey plastic tub that is a direct product contact
surface.
• On December 28, 2013, FSIS documented a noncompliance for live
cockroaches found during production to the left of the faucet of Inspection
Station 7.
• On November 4, 2013, FSIS documented a noncompliance for live
cockroaches found during production next to the sanitizer dispenser box,
which is located on the wall next to the ice machine.
• On September 14, 2013, FSIS documented a noncompliance for live
cockroaches found during production on the floor between the liver
tumbler/belt and the wall.
