The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced an update on an initial recall of Chicken of the Sea tuna fish on March 8. Tri-Union Seafoods Company has expanded the list of their initial recall of a limited amount of five-ounce cans of chunk white albacore tuna in water to also include a limited amount of Chicken of the Sea Chunk light tuna in Oil because the seams on the lids failed to meet company standards.
The tuna company explains that when can products do not meet seam standards, there is a likely chance that food spoilage will result if any “food spoilage organisms” or “pathogens” come into contact with the tuna.
The initial recall first announced by the FDA on March 6 only affected limited amount of five-ounce cans of chunk white albacore tuna in water with UPC numbers 0 48000 03355 0 and Best-By date of Jan. 18, 2017; they were nationally distributed between Feb. 4-Feb. 27.
The expanded recall list will include single cans of affected five-ounce chunk light tunas in oil with the UPC code 0 48000 00195 5 and Best-By-Date of Jan. 15, 2017; they were nationally distributed between Jan. 23-March 6.
The expanded list of recalled Can Lot codes is extensive; the entire recall list is available at the FDA website.
Consumers who have purchased any of the affected Chicken of the Sea brand cans of chunk white albacore tuna in water or chunk light tunas in oil may contact the company’s 24 hour Recall information line at 1-800-597-5898 with any questions.
No illnesses or complaints have been reported as a result of this recall to date.
