Columbian model Natalia Paris is under fire today since claiming hormone-injected chickens are responsible for turning young boys gay. This story is making headlines at the same time as a report by The New York Times on Thursday, March 21, that for the first time the American Academy of Pediatrics supports gay marriage as, “being in the best interests of their children”.
Colombian model Natalia Paris tried to explain how men turn gay. Apparently, it’s because they’re consuming too much hormone-injected chicken.
“Because of that, the boys that are eating [that kind of] chicken, because they are injecting female hormones, are starting to turn into homosexuals, she told Colombia’s Caracol TV.
Paris then went on with her “health lesson”, explaining that young girls between the ages of 7 and 10 are going through puberty earlier than ever due to eating poultry injected with, “all sorts of hormones”.
The controversial model is known for her animal activism. However, many find her latest remarks as going too far.
Andres Fernando Moncada, president of the National Federation for Colombian Poultry Farmers, called Paris’ claim “rubbish”. Moncada also explained that ridiculous statements from famous people such as Paris should be taken with a grain of salt.
“When you hear this kind of a statement from a public figure like Natalia Paris, we must express our total outrage”, Moncada said, according to The Huffington Post.
Meanwhile, the pediatrician’s group declared their findings that children raised by same-sex couples are on an even par with those raised in traditional heterosexual households.
Based on an “extensive review” of the scientific literature, children growing up in households led by gay men or lesbians, “are not disadvantaged in any significant respect relative to children of heterosexual parents”.
There is an emerging body of evidence which demonstrates that children raised by gay or lesbian parents fare as well in emotional, cognitive and social functioning as their peers raised by heterosexuals, according to the academy.
Dr. Travis Kidner, 36, a surgeon in Los Angeles, married his partner Hernan Lopez, 42, a media executive, in 2008. They adopted 2 year-old Nicholas and 21-month-old Zoe. “It’s important for kids to know they are from a stable home and that their parents are married”, said Dr. Kidner.
Another less positive reason same-sex couples should be allowed to marry focuses on divorce law. Since marriage provides for a legally structured visitation arrangement and custody, it only helps affected children to be protected by the covenant of marriage.
“If people can’t get married, then they can’t get divorced”, Dr. Perrin said. “That legal system that exists to protect our most vulnerable, namely children, isn’t in play.”
