Yesterday was my birthday. Before I left work, comprehensive tip regarding the whereabouts of my bike which had been thefted about 2 weeks before, solved the case.
What a great present!
OKCPD Detective Feely called and identified that he needed to speak to me today, and before noon and before I could call him back, he was at the door of my office and my bike was outside.
The thief had done time prior in prison, and was actually currently wanted on 2 felonies. The double bike theft the day of my bike theft was a nominal discovery, but apprehending him apparently allowed for all charges to come forward and multiple crimes to be solved at once. Yeaaaah!
I began riding a bike as a commuter when I returned to OKC from Atlanta 3, almost 4 years ago. I am 51 now, so that is all kind of remarkable in and of itself. I ride in all weather and all manner of dress... shorts and sandals to jeans and boots to suit and heels. If there's no ice, I'm on it.
People on the street, on the bus and in my office began asking me about the bike or referencing me as "chick on a bike" about that time...
I put it on my business card for Examiner.com... mostly as a joke but it has truly become part of my calling card. If ever I showed up without the bike, on hiatus or otherwise... the questions would roll. " hey, where's your BIKE????"
When my bike was taken from the lobby of my office building under the watch of not one but 3 cameras and a very busy building, everyone knew.
Everyone within my circles made it a point to share amongst themselves and their peer groups or electronic connections on Twitter which truly allowed for the set of providential information to come together to allow the bike to return to me. This was the second bike I'd lost in those 3 years... so everyone was hyper-alert this time.
The bike is somewhat dismantled and damaged, but it appears Schlegel Bikes can reinvent the bike they basically tricked out to accomodate my riding needs and height.
I am very grateful for all the attentions aid of the community in general. And the cooperations and patience of the OKCPD who made 4 trips out to my office to get reports, information or respond to sightings.... and then the 5th trip with the return. That is a lot of help for a bike.
I do also hope that OKC will remember that OKCPD is functioning with as much as a 2/3 deficit on what they need with regards to staff on the street, in advanced positions and clerical... all who make their service go. And when it is time to address bonds, taxes and selection of Mayoral leaders in 2014 that those needs will be heard and supported to the betterment of their workforce and the safety of the citizens of OKC.
