Chicagoland hospitals not among best, but score well in several areas

Rush University Medical Center in the City's near west side scored well in eight speciality catergories.

Not one Chicago area hospital scored in the top 21 in U.S. News & Would Report’s Best Hospital rankings released last week. The rankings are the result of nationwide hospital evaluations.

Although the report--which based its rankings on several factors including reputation, mortality index (death rate), patient safety, nurse staffing and technology--didn't contain any local medical centers, some Chicagoland hospitals, most notably Rush University Medical Center and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, did score well in several specialty subcategories ranging from cancer treatment to urology.

In those subcategories, Rush University Medical Center came in:

-12th in Orthopedics
-12th in Rheumatology
-12 in Neurology and Neurosurgery
-26th in Digestive Disorders
-30th in Heart and Heart Surgery
-31st in Urology
-50th in Ear, Nose and Throat
-50th in Gynecology

Meanwhile, Northwestern Memorial Hospital came in:
-11th in Neurology and Neurosurgery
-12th in Rheumatology
-18th in Gynecology
-19th in Geriatric Care
-22nd in Orthopedics
-28th in Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders
-32d in Respiratory Disorders

University of Chicago Medical Center also had an impressive showing, ranking a sixth in Digestive Disorders, 14th in Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders, 17th in both Cancer and Kidney Disorders and 47th in Gynecology.

The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago registered 17th in Ophthalmology and 49th in Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders.

Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood scored 45th in Heart and Heart Surgery.

Advocate Good Samaritan in west suburban Downers Grove came in 42nd for Digestive Disorders.

St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates came in 44th in Respiratory Disorders.

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago located in the near northside scored a highly reputable number one ranking in Rehabilitation.

The overall top honors for the nation’s best hospitals went to Baltimore’s John Hopkins Hospital followed by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn

You forgot about Central DuPage Hospital -- 35th in Orthopaedics!

I don't mean to go on and on BUT I love you both and health care is just too important. I am sending you this because I want you to see that there are significant differences in the quality of hospitals. St. Francis is not on the list.
