Chicagoans react to Pope Benedict’s resignation

Pope Benedict XVI shocked the world by announcing that he was resigning as head of the Catholic Church. The Pope cited health as his primary reason for leaving. His resignation is set to take effect on February 28.

Whether admonishing American nuns for their focus on social issues or communicating with the world on Twitter; Benedict sought to refocus the church on its core values. His resignation creates a huge void of peace in a world where turmoil and uncertainty exists at almost every corner. His announcement also left the Catholic Church and its members in a state of pause and concern.

Issues such as marriage equality have forced the Catholic Church to take a stand; even at a time when the country and world are becoming more and more tolerant.

Chicagoans reacted to the Pope’s decision with surprise and concern.

“I think the Pope tried too hard to drive change. I think his venture into Twitter was example of him (the church) trying to keep up with an evolving world. The church no longer is a transforming agent. Not his fault; just our reality.”

Catholics (and others) are encouraged to trust God, and lean not on their own understanding.
