Most Chicagoans know the ties to the city for Grammy nominees Kanye West and R. Kelly, but there are others up for the coveted award. too.
Lupe Fiasco was nominated for Best Rap Performance (against Kanye, too) for "The Show Goes On." The competition is "Look at Me Now," Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes; "Otis," Kanye West and Jay-Z; "Moment 4 Life," Nicki Minaj with Drake and "Black and Yellow," Wiz Khalifa.
Eighth Blackbird is up for Best Small Ensemble Performance for "Mackey: Lonely Motel - Music From Slide," Rinde Eckert and Steven Mackey. Their competition is "Frank: Hilos," Gabriela Lena Frank - ALIAS Chamber Ensemble; "The Kingdoms of Castille," Richard Savino - El Mundo; "A Seraphic Fire Christmas," Patrick Dupré Quigley - Seraphic Fire and "Sound The Bells!" the Bay Brass.
Meanwhile, "Mackey, Steven: Lonely Motel - Music From Slide," Steven Mackey is also up for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Competition in that category is "Aldridge, Robert: Elmer Gantry," Robert Aldridge and Herschel Garfein; "Crumb, George: The Ghosts of Alhambra," George Crumb; "Friedman, Jefferson: String Quartet No. 3," Jefferson Friedman and "Ruders, Poul: Piano Concerto No. 2," Poul Ruders.
It is up for another in the Best Engineered Album, Classical. The competition is "Aldridge: Elmer Gantry," Byeong-Joon Hwang, John Newton, Jesse Lewis; "Glazunov: Complete Concertos," Richard King; "Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos Nos. 3 and 4," Arne Akselberg and "Weinberg: Symphony No. 3 and Suite No. 4 From The Golden Key," Torbjörn Samuelsson.
Kurt Elling nabbed a nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album for "The Gate." He is competing against "Round Midnight," Karrin Allyson; "The Mosaic Project," Terri Lyne Carrington and Various Artists; "American Road," Tierney Sutton and "The Music of Randy Newman," Roseanna Vitro.
Wilco is nominated for Best Rock Album for "The Whole Love." Others in the category are "Rock 'n' Roll Party Honoring Les Paul," Jeff Beck; "Wasting Light," Foo Fighters; "Come Around Sundown," Kings of Leon and "I'm With You," Red Hot Chili Peppers.
OK Go is up for Best Short-Form Video for "All is Not Lost." Others include "Rolling in the Deep," Adele; "Yes I Know," Memory Tapes; "Lotus Flower," Radiohead; "First of the Year (Equinox)," Skrillex and "Perform This Way," "Weird Al" Yankovic.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass, the Numero Group Label, the Lincoln Trio, International Contemporary Ensemble and the Pacifica Quartet also grabbed nominations.
"The 54th Annual Grammy Awards" will take place live on Sunday, Feb. 12 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on CBS from 7-10:30 p.m. CT.
