Alexis T. Prokopchuk, 29, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with animal cruelty and reckless conduct after allegedly leaving a baby alligator in O'Hare Airport in Chicago on November 1 reports the

Prokopchuk appeared in Cook County Court Branch on Wednesday after being arrested and failing to appear in court in Du Page County. She is being held in lieu of $5,000 bond.

Video surveillance recordings showed Peokopchuk holding a 25 inch alligator near an escalator at Terminal 3 after entering the airport. At that time, the woman let the alligator loose and walked away.

A Good Samaritan found the baby alligator shortly thereafter and informed authorities. Sadly the three-year-old reptile had been undernourished and fed an improper diet. Named "Allie" by his rescuers, the alligator was taken to the Chicago Herpetological Society.

When questioned why she would abandon an alligator in the airport, Prokopchuk stated that a friend of hers had threatened to flush the gator, but instead Prokopchuk rescued it. Unfortunately, the woman stated she was high on drugs and abandoned the animal in the airport.

The alligator was taken to the Chicago Herpetological Society for rehabilitation and care.
