Marilyn Grimes and her Chihuahua were brutally attacked in the Chatham neighborhood by a neighbor’s three dogs, fatally injuring Grimes' dog. Marilyn, age 64 is stable but remains in critical condition, and it is now feared she may lose one of her legs which was severely mauled in the attack.
Grimes was walking her 5 year old Chihuahua named "Queenie" down an alley in the 8700 block of South Cregier Avenue, when 3 pitbulls pushed through their unlocked gate and attacked the woman and her dog. Queenie died instantly during the attack, and 64 year old Grimes was rushed to Stroger Hospital after sustaining injuries that included deep punctures and the tearing into her legs down to the bone, of which she is currently undergoing treatment and surgery.
According to a report by NBC Chicago, "The owner of the three dogs also tried to intervene in the attack and was injured, officials said. The 23-year-old woman was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in stable condition, according to Chicago Fire Media. "I'm not a bad person and I'm so sorry. I'm sorry that this happened to her," said owner Katesha Curtiss. Curtiss said she had the dogs as protection for her and her children, but that she never anticipated an attacked like this would happen. "I just want her to know that I'm sorry and that I'm here for her," Curtiss said. "Whatever I can do I will do it."
Katesha Curtiss, the owner of the pitbulls, could be facing potential charges for the brutal attack, and citations as the dogs were not restrained, or licensed, or up to date on their vaccinations (including rabies.)
Although her condition is currently stable but still critical, it it feared that Grimes might now lose one of her legs as a result of this viscous attack.
