This is it. This weekend, Chicago hosts its annual TRIATHLON! The Chicago Triathlon is touted as the World's Largest Triathlon, with upwards of 8500 athletes participating. In recent years, and with Lifetime Fitness taking over the main sponsorship of the race, they've brought the number of athletes down from that number. Still one of the largest triathlons in the world, the Chicago Triathlon has some very unique aspects to the race:
- Lake Michigan swim - this is a deep water start, so participants should be prepared to tread for 2-3 minutes before taking off. It's a tight squeeze in the starting corral, so seed yourself accordingly.
- Biking on Lake Shore Drive - beautiful views if you are taking the time to look around during your ride. But be aware of the joint expansions and potholes on this ride. Another thing to be aware of - this is one of the only courses where you pass on the RIGHT instead of the left due to course design.
- Running on the path along the lake and past the Shedd Aquarium is another spectacular view, but note that there is very little, if any, shade on this course. Be prepared with plenty of sunscreen and be sure to hydrate adequately.
The Chicago Triathlon is a "must do" on the triathlete race list.
