The Chicago Police Department charged 18-year-old Alexis Valdez with one count of first-degree murder on Dec. 26, following the gruesome discovery of a decapitated body in the teen’s Chicago basement apartment.
Responding to a homicide call, the decapitated body of 41-year-old Sylvester Diaz-Hernandez was found by police in Valdez’s apartment early in the morning on Christmas Day in Chicago’s Hermosa neighborhood, according to ABC News.
Valdez, who was standing outside his apartment building when police arrived around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, was arrested immediately.
Police also recovered a knife at the scene.
The identity of the victim, Sylvester Diaz-Hernandez, was confirmed by the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The medical examiner's office reported that Diaz-Hernandez died of "multiple blunt and sharp-force injuries."
Chicago police say that the decapitated victim also lived in the same apartment as Alexis Valdez on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
The Chicago Police Department has not yet released any other details in the decapitation, including the relationship between Alexis Valdez and Sylvester Diaz-Hernandez, or whether the decapitation occurred before or after Diaz-Hernandez was killed.
Alexis Valdez is scheduled to appear in a Chicago courtroom today on his first-degree murder charge of murdering and dismembering Sylvester Diaz-Hernandez.
