Summer months are known for days of fun but for Chicago, it has become marked as an indicator of increased gun violence. Red Eye Chicago has been tracking homicides in the Chicagoland area, their “Chicago Gun Statistics” report reveals, that five months into “2014”, 112 deaths have occurred due to gun violence. Sunday, June 1, 2014 Chicago area radio stations have pledged to stop the music. While City Officials are developing plans to allow police officers the opportunity to accumulate overtime hours, in order to have a presences in high risk neighborhoods, which include parks and public housing. Some citizens have presented solutions; “Chance The Rapper” and his father initiated a #SaveChicago tweeter campaign, which curbed gun violence in Chicago for 42 hours.

Chance’s father spoke with churches, schools, outreach programs and businesses pleading for a commitment to give forth effort to save every life possible on the night of Friday, May 23, 2014. He encouraged the people of Chicago to display banners and posters stating #SaveChicago. While for every hour, Chicago radio stations WGCI, Power92Chicago and WV103 announced to the public, “Put the Guns Down Chicago”.

Sunday from 7 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Chicago radio stations WGCI- Hip Hop and R &B, V103-Old School, R & B, 1690WVON-Talk Radio and, Power92Chicago, have pledged to stop the music and, open the air waves to the citizens of Chicago, given them the opportunity to assist with developing solutions to “Put the Guns Down Chicago”.
