This year Chicago school kids will embark on a whole new adventure. Many will be attending schools that are totally unfamiliar to them, and will walk through neighborhoods that are less safe. In effort to lessen the fear of parents and school kids the Chicago Police Department have designated Safe Passage routes.
According to CPD, Superintendent McCarthy more than 1,800 residents have signed up to ensure positive adult presence near and on the routes. Some of the 1,000 reported vacant buildings along the routes have been demolished, graffiti and overgrown lots have been cleaned up. In all the Chicago Police Department, Department of Buildings, and Department of Streets and Sanitation have addressed over 25,000 potential safety issues.
Next Monday, August 26, 2013, every effort to keep students safe will be implemented as Safe Passage routes will be monitored in the morning and afternoon by community workers who know the neighborhood and have received specialized training.
