Chicago's Marine Industry Day 2009 is coming

Chicago's Marine Industry Day will be on Thursday, March 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 pm at Harrah's Joliet Casino in Joliet, Illinois.  I highly recommend this event for anyone working in the maritime industry anywhere in the Great Lakes.   Organized by Shipmasters Lodge #3, Chicago's fraternal order of captains, Marine Industry Day is always full of relevant and up-to-date information to get merchant mariners ready for the 2009 sailing season.

This year, there will be presentations by the Maritime Administration (MARAD) on America's Marine Highway (that is, shipping via water which otherwise would be done on asphalt), the US Coast Guard, licensing expert Chuck Kakuska, and Earl Zuelke of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, who will speak on security and response.  In addition there will be focus groups about passenger vessels, towing vessels, and merchant mariners.

The cost to attend is $40 at the door, and it is worth it.  A buffet lunch is included and traditionally, the vendors and sponsors have given away merchandise worth far more than the entrance fee.
