Max’s Delicatessen and Restaurant, a North Shore Deli in Highland Park, is recycling day old bagels. This innovative organization presents to doggie parents, Dawgy Bagels.
Max’s Deli has a rich history, having been in business for almost 25 years. This restaurant has been voted “Best in Town” by Chicago Magazine. Brothers, Greg and Joey Morelli, the “Food Fight Brothers,” are continuously looking for a new way to cater to their customers.
In addition to the ‘people’ deli favorites like their pastrami sandwich, homemade soups, all-day breakfast and full-service catering, now they are pointedly looking for good dog treats for the local canines and going green in the process.
The Dawgy Bagels are a whole new line for this local business. The product is aimed at giving new life to leftovers and drawing in a new customer base – pet parents looking for better, fresher, more wholesome treats for their beloved canines. Leftover bagels will offer that to Chicago’s public.
“We toss out a lot of unsold bagels every day because we don’t use any preservatives,” says Joey Morelli, chef and creator of the new product. “For a long time, I’d been wanting to sell a line of dog products and this seemed like a natural. Our Dawgy Bagels have a shelf life of 30 days, but they won’t last that long with many dog families.”
The test market for this new doggy product was Morelli’s friends’ dogs as well as his girlfriend Annie’s dog. To get a wider perspective, the Dawgy Bagels were served at a recent Pet Walk benefitting The Puppy Mill Project. They began selling Dawgy Bagels at Max’s Deli last week and the pet friendly products were a big hit with customers from the start.
“We use bacon grease and bone meal making these bagels very irresistible to dogs,” adds Morelli. “What’s not to love for dogs when it comes to bacon and bone meal? They’ll make great stocking stuffers for your furry friends!”
Dawgy Bagels sell for $3.95 a dozen and are available at Max’s Delicatessen and Restaurant in Highland Park. When you stop in to Chicago’s New York Deli to pick up your dog’s fresh treats, you will be able to enjoy Wi-Fi and Intelligencia Coffee while you wait for your delicious deli fare.
