Chicago area’s electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are set to expand by 280 stations due to a $1.9 million contract to the firm 350Green, who will front approximately $6.87 million. The contract, paid for by state and federal grants, will prepare the region’s infrastructure to accept significant growth in plug-in hybrid electrics (PHEV) and electric vehicles.
Car makers are releasing electric and electric hybrid cars only to select markets with infrastructure that is able to support electric vehicle charging for owners. The charging stations, where subscribers can pay $50 to $60 dollars per month, will charge an electric vehicle in 30 minutes to 4 hours, depending on the voltage of the charging device.
Currently, the Chicago area has 43 EV plug in stations associated with Chicago-based CarbonDay Automotive and Coulomb Technologies. Access to these free stations can be found at the ChargePoint Network.
