Starting in 2001, the Chicago Public Library (CPL) began a new kind of book club, which it dubbed One Book, One Chicago. They’d choose a book and create a month of programming, from readings to discussions, around their chosen literary work. But that format is changing. On Mar. 11, 2013, the CPL announced, via an email, that they’re expanding the program to include a full year of programming around a certain theme.
For the year spanning April 2013 to March 2014, the theme is “migration -- how has it shaped Chicago?” To kick things off, pick up the book, “The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration” by Isabel Wilkerson.
According to the email press release, “Chicago Public Library and its many community partners will offer multiple ways for every Chicagoan to explore how the drive to move, to migrate and to create a better life has made Chicago into the most American of American cities.”
Some activities throughout the year will include films, lectures, storytelling, art shows, performances, and, of course, more books.
