Secret Colours are going to be the second featured Chicago Psychedelic band of my Chicago Psych week. They are still heavily influenced by 1960s Rolling Stones Satanic Majesties and the San Francisco washed out, drugged up, guitar loaded rock 'n roll, but take a softer edge than our friends Rabble Rabble, our first band of Chicago Psych week. Secret Colours are exactly what the name says, shimmering and effect laden guitars and sitars, dreamy vocals.
Secret Colours have everything that psychedelic fans need in a post-Brian Jonestown Massacre heyday need to get their fixes. They're young, they wear leather jackets and sunglasses, and they even have a girl dedicated to being a tambourine shaker and back-up singer. What else could you ask for?
You can download their two EP's Follow the Drone and In the Absence on their bandcamp website for free, as well as a cover of the Beatles song "Tomorrow Never Knows" and their first full length self-titled Secret Colours.
Though Secret Colors may not be the most ground breaking or original band to hit the scene, they are certainly not bad. They are solid and know their sound, they know what they are capable of, and know what they're aiming for. A song near the end of the self-title "Western" is a nice break because it combines the typical four chord rock song and Wild West influenced lead guitar lines that actually sound like what Cowboys on acid might have grooved to.
They've got some upcoming shows:
Feb 25th at Martyr's 21+
Feb 26th Jurrasic Park Lafayette IN
Then all the way to SXSW (like our friends Rabble Rabble)to show the musical world that Chicago knows how to Follow the Drone.
You can always find all this info and more at the bands website here.
