Chicago professionals: Termination of flexible work programs may be a trend

Yahoo and Best Buy both announced major changes to how their workforce will work in the future.

Best Buy announced the termination of its Results-Only Work Environment (ROWE). The program focused primarily on output and results; not hours worked. Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly said the company needs “all hands on deck” in its efforts to become more profitable.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer cited the need for employees to work “side by side” as reason for terminating its popular work from home program. According to CNN Money, it is unknown how many of Yahoo’s 11 thousand employees will be impacted by the change.
Chicago business professionals were not surprised by the changes made by Yahoo and Best Buy.

“There are a number of reasons to make changes right now. First, both companies could use the shot in the arm that sometimes comes with change. Second, I think the productivity and efficiency gains that are often associated with work from home programs is overstated. I also believe that there are certain operational synergies that can only be realized when a company is together. I wouldn’t be surprised if others (companies) followed suit. This is not about upsetting a workforce; it’s about survival.”

Best Buy is believed to have 50 stores in Illinois.
