In March, the Illinois Senate passed a bill to provide private school tuition vouchers to as many as 22,000 children. These students are from Chicago’s lowest-ranking schools.
Currently, the bill is in the house and in the process of being rewritten by its lead sponsor, Democratic Representative Kevin Joyce, to include even more children.
While school vouchers are a controversial topic in Chicago, the tuition covered by the voucher would come from funds the state provides to Chicago Public Schools. Part of the amendment being worked on is to guarantee that the state won't spend any more than it does now.
