Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis warned the gangs in August, if one gang member commits an act of violence all members will suffer. Gang member Sharod Pierce, 23, did not take the warning seriously, he shot 18-year-old Anthony Carter on August 31st, the next day police had him under arrest charging him with first degree murder, then began investigating the gang he belonged to, Black Souls.
On Tuesday, October 26, 2010 the Superintendent announced they had made a arrest sweep of more then 60 Black Souls members, a Garfield Park gang. Four arrested on weapons charges, fifty-two on drug related charges, and others with misdemeanor charges.
Weis stated in a news conference that they used every tool they had and that teams of narcotic, gang and patrol officers all were involved.
The Black Souls is a mostly Black gang founded in 1962 in the Garfield Park neighborhood. There are at least four different factions, in the 1970’s their power grew as they moved in to the Madison and Monroe Ave. corridors and took hold of a large chunk of the Rockwell Gardens housing projects.
