The first of four incidents in which a police officer shot at someone was when an off-duty female Chicago police officer shot an intruder in her own home in the 7900 block of South Sacramento Avenue at approximately 9:40 a.m. on Friday on Chicago’s South Side. The person shot is believed to be a teenager who is currently in serious condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
The second police-shooting incident occurred in the 5100 block of North Christiana Avenue near the North Park University campus in the Albany Park neighborhood on Chicago’s North Side at approximately 12:25 a.m. on Saturday. Prior to the shooting of a man who was arrested, police were called for a gang disturbance in which gang members were blocking a bridge. Details of the shooting are reportedly not clear.
The third police-shooting incident occurred at the intersection of 63rd Street and Martin Luther King Drive at 2:10 a.m. when West Woodlawn neighborhood police on the South Side approached the area after hearing gunfire. They found a 23-year-old man shooting at an unknown target. The man was allegedly turning around and facing the police with a gun raised up in his hand, so they fired at him. After the incident, the man ran into a nearby apartment building, was found, and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The report does not say that the man shot at the police.
Finally, in the fourth incident involving a policeman shooting a gun, an unnamed off-duty Chicago police officer killed a man on the Near West Side at approximately 6:45 a.m. at a Chicago Housing Authority building located in the 1800 block of West Monroe Street. The officer was working part-time there when Marion Horton, 28, of the 400 block of West Division Street was at the front desk of the building when his security duty-partner asked Horton to leave the building. Reportedly, the man was combative and the off-duty officer entered the altercation between the other security guard and Horton. When the off-duty officer told Horton to go about his business, Horton reportedly asked the officer what he was going to do about it. After the officer stated that he’s a Chicago police officer and told Horton to just go away, Horton said he wasn’t going anywhere.
In the following physical altercation, the man pulled the policeman to the ground and ripped out some of the other security officer’s braids. The off-duty policeman on security guard detail reportedly feared that Horton would get the female security officer’s gun, and he pulled his own gun out and told Horton that he was under arrest. When Horton lunged at the off-duty policeman he shot him in the chest.
Horton was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m. at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
