Children’s Dentistry of Forest Park is one big step closer to naming the large colorful “smile with shoes” perched above its front door.
After wading through more than 60 nominations, the pediatric dentistry staff narrowed the field to six finalists. Now it’s in the hands of the public to select the name from these whimsical options: Frankie Fresh Mouth, Prince Chomping, Chewy, Mr. Chompers, Chipper Chomper and Smooches.
Each individual whose nomination advanced to the final round receives a $25 gift card to Target. Even more significantly, the top vote-getter will receive $1 per vote from Children’s Dentistry, up to $500; the practice will donate $100 to each of the other charity finalists. (See end of this story for the complete list of nickname nominations and designated charities.)
Voting officially began on Sept. 12th and is open through the end of the month.
In August, Children’s Dentistry announced the effort, “Ready, Set…Name That Really Big Smile Contest.” as a community-minded way to give a moniker to the 6-foot, 200-pound colorful fiberglass structure commissioned by its founder, Dr. Jerry Udelson. In June, he installed it above the office at 1125 S. Harlem Ave. in Forest Park.
The “big smile” refers not only to Children’s Dentistry’s “Little Teeth, Big Smiles” motto, but also the next-door Big Smiles Orthodontics, Center for Orthodontic Excellence practice, also owned by Udelson.
From naming the practice’s colorful car “Fluo-rider” to a variety of games children can enjoy during visits, the playful addition is just the latest example of his passion to create a fun, welcoming environment for children and adults alike.
That focus was recognized recently by voters at RedTricycle.com. For the second straight year, the office was chosen as the Most Awesome Family & Pediatric Dentist in the Chicago area. In online voting at the Red Tricycle website, Children’s Dentistry outpolled 13 other Chicagoland finalists. The practice is identified on the site by its “Little Teeth, Big Smiles” motto.
In the “Ready, Set…Name That Really Big Smile Contest,” any individual can vote up to two times: once online (via email or Facebook) and once at the office. For those who come to the office they will get a closer look at the fiberglass sign, which looms overhead more than 20 feet off the ground.
Wrapping around three sides of a decorative brick wall, each tooth is 13 inches tall and the teeth are seven feet across. Beneath the giant teeth is a pair of green high-top sneakers, laced to the top and roughly 2 feet in length. On one side of the teeth is a mock key, suggesting the teeth are just a few rotations away from starting to chatter.
There are three ways to cast your vote:
-Email your choice to BigSmileContest@gmail.com
-Post your choice on Children Dentistry’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ChildrensDentistryForestParkIL
-Visit the practice at 1125 S. Harlem Ave., just north of Roosevelt Road in Forest Park, to submit your selection in person. (Children’s Dentistry has designed a voting box for the occasion.)
