Chicago mayoral candidate Miguel del Valle came out against the ‘Performance Counts’ legislation which would disallow teachers the right to strike in the Chicago Public Schools. Del Valle basically calls the bill a form of teacher-bashing and questions why a bill is being introduced that challenges the Chicago teachers’ right to strike when they haven’t gone on strike in Chicago for 23 years.
Del Valle used his support of the teachers in Chicago to give a striking contrast between himself and Rahm Emanuel who was hopeful of getting the legislation passed before the new Illinois legislators take their seats on Wednesday.
Del Valle insists that teachers would be in favor of reasonable teacher-related reforms that wouldn’t strip them of their right to strike yet have teacher evaluation measures that would dismiss non-performing teachers.

This is a Democratic Republic, and people who profess to believe in the Constitution need to understand that anyone deserves the right to strike.
