Chicago may get 5 to 10 inches snow: Volunteer to shovel for elderly, disabled

Chicago has temporarily warmed up to approximately 30 degrees, but snow is soon to follow. According to the National Weather Service, there will be 5 to 10 inches of snow by Sunday evening.

Dangerously cold wind chills (30 degrees below) are expected to follow from Sunday evening to Tuesday morning, but the most extreme wind chills (40 to 50 degrees below) are estimated to be Sunday night leading to Monday morning.

The target county areas in Illinois are Cook, De Kalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, La Salle, Lake, Lee and Will.

According to ABC, O'Hare canceled 400 flights ahead of the storm, and 30 flights were canceled at Midway.

However, there is still a $100 fine for Chicago residents who don't shovel their snow within 24 hours.

For elderly (over age 60) and/or disabled residents who can't physically shovel snow, they can contact 311 to request a volunteer from the Chicago Snow Corps to shovel their snow. Residents who would like to sign up for the Chicago Snow Corps can register here.

The City of Chicago does not endorse volunteers entering the residents' homes. They volunteer free of charge to only shovel public sidewalks and a path leading to the front door. Volunteers do not shovel driveways or accept payments and tips for shoveling.
