46-year-old, Urooj Khan, was an immigrant from India but a successful businessman in Chicago. Owning dry cleaning businesses and real estate holdings, Khan was able to leave his widow over $1 million after his death.
However, the story isn’t about how this Indian immigrant was able to build a life for himself in Chicago. This story, is yet another tragic incident that involves how winning the lottery can be both a blessing and a curse.
Urooj Khan won the Illinois Lottery for $1 million and received a check payout of $425,000. Khan’s wife, Shabana Ansari, told reporters she had cooked a traditional Indian meal for him and their family. Ansari’s father and Khan’s daughter from a previous marriage were in attendance for the meal and Khan excused himself early, companioning that he did not feel well.
Ansari was quoted by the Chicago Sun-Times as saying, “[Khan] falling asleep in a chair, waking up in agony, then collapsing in the middle of the night. She said she called 911.”
Although the medical examiner ruled Khan’s death was of natural causes, a family member requested additional testing, which showed there was a lethal dose of cyanide in his blood.
With a homicide investigation underway, many things are being questioned from whether or not Khan and Ansari were ever legally married to reports that Ansari may have tried to cash the lottery check after Khan’s death.
Khan’s wife has not been formally named a suspect in the poisoning death of her husband but she has retained an attorney. Ansari was quoted by ABC News as saying, “I am cooperating with the investigation. I want the truth to come out.”
