Latinos Para La Revolución and other local Latino civil rights groups want to make National Hispanic Heritage Month just as important as African American History Month. This past week, they have talked to different college and high school campuses throughout the city about why this is important.
“Latinos are a bigger minority now than African Americans, especially in Chicago,” says Revolución spokesperson Luis Ramos. “Usually, National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated, but nobody understands why they celebrate it. They don’t understand the culture.“
This week, college campuses such as Loyola University, Martin Luther King College, and UCLA have held several campus-wide events in celebration of African American History Month. Several Latino, as well as other minority groups, have participated.
