Chicago Latinos remember Whitney Houston

It is a very sad evening in Chicago, and several Latino Whitney Houston fans have come forward to honor the singer, who died Saturday afternoon.

Robert Lopez was a student at Loyola University when he first heard Whitney Houston’s “You Give Good Love.” “I was mesmerized by her voice and talent,” Lopez says. “I remember standing in line to see The Bodyguard in 1992.

1992 was the first time Emilia Lopez first heard of Whitney Houston when she was just five-years old and listened to “I Will Always Love You.” “I immediately fell in love with her voice and was fascinated with how she was able to take any song and turn it into a classic."

Juan Telez was always a Whitney Houston fan, but felt very betrayed when she turned to drugs. “I always thought of her as a role model for children, including myself. I was very depressed when I saw her deteriorating.”

When Latinos meet at the Martin Luther King Jr. Public Library tomorrow, there will be a tribute to Whitney Houston. After all, her father was actually born in Puerto Rico.
