Today is the last day of summer and the fall colors will soon change. In a previous article the author gave some suggestions on where to go in the area to enjoy the turning of the leaves. For a different slant on this annual autumnal event try a canoe trip.
The author was talking with PR representatives from Utah and the conversation turned to the Grand Canyon. The reps expressed how different and how beautiful the canyon is as viewed from the river. One gets a completely different perspective about a natural wonder as viewed from a boat compared to walking on land or by car.
This is especially true in the Midwest when applied to fall leaf scenery. Trees in the Prairie state can sometimes be few and far between. However, trees are usually found in abundance along rivers. Not only do rivers give a different perspective, they also give a better one as there are more trees found along a local river.
This is true even in the big concrete jungle known as Chicago. The lead picture in this column is taken from the Chicago River. Even in the middle of the city there is an impressive tree network that straddles both side of this river. This is true of most local rivers including the Des Plaines River and the Nippersink Creek just north of Chicago.
Another great reason to view the color change from a river is that rivers, especially the Wisconsin and Mississippi have created valleys and bluffs that are often tree covered. Orange, red, and brown colored trees on top of scenic bluffs cannot be beat during the fall in the Midwest. The Fox, Wisconsin, Kishwaukee, Illinois, and Mississippi Rivers are just a few rivers in the area with scenic valleys and bluffs.
Please click on this article for a comprehensive list on where to rent canoes in the Chicago area. For more information about rivers in the area check out the guides done by Morrall River Films. They have DVDs for sale on Illinois and Wisconsin Rivers. Another great way to start a canoe adventure in the fall or anytime is by joining a canoe club. OMG, the beauty, if only I could make it there soon.
Nice!
Being on the water is definitely a different and better view than being on the shore.
What a great idea! Thanks Ted!
The rock formations look fab. We went rafting on the Colorado last month. Can't wait to see our rock photos. Used a water-proof camera and need to develop the film. Hope they're as good.
This sounds like a lot of fun and exercise too. Thanks!
Great photos and video! Looks like a beautiful way to see the fall colors.
Trees along water ways might get the moisture needed for vibrant fall colors.
Left a comment on the video. We really enjoyed it. Thanks Ted.
