Chicago cop shot in the head on the South Side

An officer with the Chicago Police Department was injured when a fragment from a shooting entered his head on Sunday evening at approximately 8:45. The shooting occurred in the South Chicago neighborhood when officers were serving a search warrant at a residence. Six people were being questioned regarding the shooting at press time, according to a Chicago Tribune report on Sunday night as well as reports given on WGN-AM radio in Chicago.

UPDATE (10 a.m., 3/10/2014): The Chicago Police officer has been released from the hospital.

Specifically, one of Chicago’s tactical officers who is assigned in the neighborhood was shot between the eyes while serving a search warrant at a home suspected of having drugs. The report says that the home where the incident happened was in the 2700 block of East 92nd Street near Manistee Avenue.

The injured officer was still able to speak after being shot. He was driven to Advocate Trinity Hospital by his partner. From there, he was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for additional care.

Garry McCarthy, the Chicago Police Department’s superintendent, was at Northwestern on Sunday night and said that the officer was struck by a ricocheted bullet, and a fragment was in the officer’s forehead.

The officer is said to be 34 years old and who has been with the Chicago Police Department for 11 years.
